Global Macro Overview

The dominant macro driver remains the Iran–US conflict and its impact on the Strait of Hormuz. WTI crude briefly fell below $90 before rebounding 3% intraday after Iran claimed it had targeted a US airbase following fresh American strikes, with Brent settling at $94.29 — down 5.31% on the session — reflecting the acute two-way volatility in energy markets. Kuwait's air defences were activated against missile and drone threats during the session, underscoring that the situation remains kinetic. The US 10-year Treasury yield fell 6 basis points to 4.50%, though the ECB warned in its Financial Stability Review that bond markets are not adequately pricing the inflation consequences of sustained energy supply disruption, with the European Commission having already cut its 2026 eurozone GDP forecast to 0.9% and lifted its inflation forecast to 3%.

Market-Moving Events · Europe
ECBThe ECB published its bi-annual Financial Stability Review on Wednesday, warning that financial markets risk a sudden and significant correction, with asset prices described as 'stretched by historical standards.' ECB Vice-President Luis de Guindos told CNBC that the risk of a market correction is 'elevated,' citing geopolitical turmoil, fiscal challenges, and outsized valuations. The Review flagged that downside risks from the Iran conflict, fiscal pressures, and macro-financial developments appear 'underestimated' by markets.
ECBThe ECB's Governing Council held all three key interest rates unchanged at its most recent meeting. The Review noted that upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth have intensified simultaneously. Bank of France Governor Villeroy de Galhau told CNBC that the ECB 'will do what is necessary as an independent central bank to bring inflation back to 2% in the medium term,' reinforcing the Governing Council's inflation-first stance.
MACROThe European Commission cut its 2026 eurozone GDP growth forecast to 0.9%, down from 1.4% in 2025 and below its prior estimate of 1.2%, citing a 'major energy shock' and a 'volatile geopolitical and trade environment.' It simultaneously raised its 2026 eurozone inflation forecast to 3%, up sharply from its prior estimate of 1.9%, presenting policymakers with a stagflationary backdrop.
MACROEurozone producer price inflation hit 1.7% in April, its highest level since May 2023, driven by intermediate goods, mineral oil prices, and capital goods including machinery. The elevated PPI reading adds to the ECB's inflation concerns and increases the pass-through risk to consumer prices in the coming months.
ENERGYEuropean energy names were the hardest hit in Wednesday's session. TotalEnergies (TTE.PA) fell 3.58% and Eni (ENI.MI) dropped 2.81% in the Euro Stoxx 50, tracking the sharp decline in crude. Brent crude fell 5.31% to $94.29 and WTI dropped 5.55% to $88.68, while TTF gas eased 0.14% to €46.52/MWh and UK NBP gas fell 2.00% to 112.44p/therm. The Oil & Gas sector (EXH2.DE) was the second-worst European sector performer, down 0.70%.
MACROTurkish political risk re-emerged as a concern for European investors with emerging market exposure. A Turkish court annulled the main opposition party's 2023 congress, effectively ousting leader Ozgur Ozel in a ruling that rattled the lira and Turkish assets. The Turkish central bank intervened by selling billions of dollars in foreign reserves to stabilise markets. The ruling is seen as potentially prolonging President Erdogan's 23-year governance.

MACROUS equities closed at fresh record highs on Wednesday. The S&P 500 gained 0.02% to 7,520.36, the Dow rose 0.36% to 50,644.28, and the Nasdaq edged up 0.07% to 26,674.73. The VIX fell 4.23% to 16.29, signalling easing near-term fear even as geopolitical tensions remain elevated. FactSet projects S&P 500 earnings grew 28.4% in Q1 2026, which would be the highest growth rate since Q4 2021.
EARNINGSSalesforce (CRM) reported Q1 CY2026 revenue of $11.13 billion, up 13.3% year-on-year, with non-GAAP EPS of $3.88, beating consensus by 24.1%. Management raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $14.09 at the midpoint and lifted revenue guidance to $46.05 billion. Despite the beat, the stock fell after hours, attributed to cautious forward guidance language.
EARNINGSHP Inc. reported Q2 FY2026 results with revenue up 9% year-on-year and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $0.86, above its prior guidance range of $0.70–$0.76. GAAP diluted EPS came in at $0.49, up 16.7% from the prior year. CFO Karen Parkhill said the company was strengthening its full-year outlook.
EARNINGSDell Technologies reports after the US close on Thursday 28 May. Shares had rallied from approximately $230 to a high of $295 ahead of the print. JPMorgan Chase maintained a Buy rating with a $280 price target; Citigroup raised its target to $290 from $235, citing strong neo-cloud and sovereign AI demand. The result will be a key read-through for European technology and AI infrastructure names.
FEDFed Governor Lisa Cook is scheduled to speak at 11:55 CET Thursday, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan spoke Wednesday. The ADP Employment Change weekly print is due at 04:15 CET Thursday, alongside the MBA 30-year mortgage rate at 03:00 CET. US API crude oil stock change data — prior reading was a draw of 9.1 million barrels — is due at both 12:30 and 13:30 CET and will be closely watched given crude price volatility.

BOJBank of Japan rate hike expectations for the 16 June meeting have intensified, with overnight interest rate swaps pricing a 77% probability of a hike. BoJ board member Okuno emphasised that financial conditions remain loose and corporate profits high, while Deputy Governor Himino reiterated commitment to further hikes, noting Japan's real interest rates remain 'at extremely low levels.' The April policy meeting vote was 6-3 to hold — an unusually divided outcome. USD/JPY was trading at 159.49 at Wednesday's close.
CHINAChina's industrial profits surged 24.7% year-on-year in April, the fastest pace since November 2023, accelerating from 15.8% in March. For the first four months of 2026, industrial profits rose 18.2%. However, gains were heavily concentrated in computing and electronics equipment manufacturing — where profits more than doubled — while broader domestic demand weakness persisted, with the PBOC noting a continued imbalance between strong supply and weak demand. The SSE Composite fell 1.25% and the Hang Seng dropped 1.06% on Wednesday.
MACROAustralia's headline CPI eased to 4.2% year-on-year in April from 4.6% in March, below the 4.4% consensus, driven by a temporary 32 cents per litre fuel excise cut. However, trimmed mean inflation — the RBA's preferred core measure — ticked up to 3.4% from 3.3%, remaining well above the 2–3% target. The RBA had already hiked 25 basis points to 4.35% on 5 May 2026, its third consecutive increase this year. The ASX 200 rose 0.69% to 8,717.7.

The SMI was the best-performing major European index, rising 0.75% to 13,627.41. The outperformance of financials came on the same day the ECB's Financial Stability Review warned of stretched valuations and elevated correction risk — a juxtaposition that the ECB itself flagged as evidence of underpriced risk.

● Neutral
Industrials

Risks & Watch Items
Key Risks · Geopolitical · Energy · ECB Policy · Trade
GEOIran–US negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz remain the single largest risk event — Kuwait air defences were activated against missile and drone threats Wednesday, and crude moved 3% intraday on reports Iran targeted a US airbase, with Brent still at $94.29 after a 5.31% decline.
ECBThe ECB Financial Stability Review — published Wednesday — explicitly warned of a risk of sudden, significant market correction, with Vice-President de Guindos citing stretched valuations, fiscal pressures, and underpriced geopolitical risk in public comments on CNBC.
MACROThe German 10-year Bund yield rose 8.6 basis points to 3.00% on Wednesday — diverging sharply from the 6 basis point decline in US 10-year Treasuries to 4.50% — a cross-market signal reflecting intensified European fiscal and inflation concerns against a softening US rate environment.
ENERGYUS API crude oil stock change data is due at 12:30 and 13:30 CET Thursday — the prior reading was a draw of 9.1 million barrels — and will be closely scrutinised given the extreme intraday volatility in crude prices driven by conflicting Iran–US diplomatic signals.
