Key Overnight Moves · Headline Critical Minerals
↳ Background Context
Lithium (Carbonate · Hydroxide · Spodumene) · Cobalt · Nickel · Manganese · Graphite
Neodymium · Dysprosium · Terbium · Praseodymium · Lanthanum · NdFeB Magnets
Gallium · Germanium · Indium · Antimony · Tungsten · Titanium · Hafnium
Uranium · Vanadium · Molybdenum
Copper · Aluminium · Zinc · Lead · Tin · Nickel Pig Iron
Why this matters: Incumbent energy prices directly affect the transition narrative — an oil spike improves EV economics; cheap gas softens the case for grid storage; high coal accelerates renewables deployment. These are not critical minerals prices but they move the investment thesis.

PRICE Lithium ▲ Bullish
Lithium carbonate prices rise sharply
SMM data shows battery-grade lithium carbonate up ~2.5% to ~22,246 USD/tonne as of June 12, with industrial grade also gaining. Recent uptrend signals tightening near-term supply amid seasonal factors and project delays.
PRICE Copper ▲ Bullish
Copper futures surge over 3%
CME copper futures climbed to 6.4740, up 3.17%, reflecting ongoing supply concerns and demand from electrification. Kamoa-Kakula guidance highlights steady African output but global deficits persist.
DEMAND Lithium ● Neutral
Citi sees lithium stabilization ahead of recovery
Citi forecasts range-bound prices near-term before supportive conditions emerge, citing seasonal demand and potential supply constraints. Long-term EV and battery growth remains key driver.
DEMAND Graphite ▲ Bullish
UNCTAD flags surging graphite demand
Global trade update projects graphite demand +131% by 2040 driven by clean tech. China dominates supply; new export measures on critical minerals add policy risk.
Analysis
Overnight Briefing
Global Overview · What Moved & Why

Overnight the USD Index slipped 0.11% to 99.75 while CNY/USD eased 0.20% to 6.7621, lifting lithium carbonate 2.40% to 25138.59 USD/t and copper 2.74% to 6.4305 USD/lb on the prior close. Softer dollar readings provided modest tailwinds to USD-denominated critical minerals without altering physical flows. Weekend price action remained contained across cobalt, nickel and antimony. No Tier-1 operational or policy events surfaced between evening June 14 and morning June 15 2026. Grasberg Block Cave at Freeport-McMoRan stayed at approximately 50% capacity after the September 2025 mud-rush, with 2026 copper guidance already cut and full output now slated for end-2027 or early 2028. DRC cobalt export quotas remain fixed at 96,600 tonnes per year through 2027. Freeport-McMoRan continues to absorb the largest near-term supply adjustment via the Grasberg phased recovery, while Chinese lithium carbonate stocks and SMM cobalt sulfate quotes showed no fresh overnight moves. ASX-listed producers tied to Indonesian copper and Australian spodumene therefore carry the most direct tonnage exposure to the multi-quarter ramp trajectory.

Battery Supply Chain · Lithium · Cobalt · Nickel · Graphite
LITHIUMLithium carbonate in China closed near 170500 CNY/t on June 12, up 2.4% that day but down 15% month-to-date.
COBALTSMM cobalt sulfate prices softened in recent sessions with refined cobalt also marked lower.
EVNo new gigafactory offtake announcements or EV demand revisions were recorded overnight.
NICKELLME nickel settled at 17630 USD/t, down 0.03% with no fresh supply-side data.
Rare Earths & Magnets · EV Motors · Defence · Wind
CHINAChinese MOFCOM export control pauses on rare-earth and lithium battery inputs remain suspended through November 2026.
EXPORTNo new rare-earth export license adjustments or NdFeB magnet feedstock changes were published overnight.
SUPPLYX and web scans found only generic long-term supply commentary with zero verified REE mine or separation plant incidents.
Strategic Metals · Export Controls · Supply Chain Risk
GALLIUMGallium held at 277.15 USD/kg with zero movement and no Chinese export policy updates.
GERMANIUMGermanium closed unchanged at 2673.66 USD/kg; no new dual-use item restrictions surfaced.
ANTIMONYAntimony traded flat at 19562 USD/t with no fresh supply-chain alerts from producing regions.
Macro Themes · Energy Transition · AI Buildout · Deglobalisation
USDUSD Index at 99.75, down 0.11%, provided mild support to USD-priced critical minerals.

RATESS&P 500 rose 0.50% to 7431 with no immediate translation into physical metal buying.
Technology Disruptions · Substitution Risks · Demand Amplifiers
Medium Impact 2–4 years
Na-Ion Battery Displacement Risk
CATL and BYD scaling Na-ion chemistry for sub-200km EVs. Reduces lithium demand in entry-level segment. Not a near-term threat to battery-grade lithium carbonate demand but creates ceiling on price recovery.
Affects: battery
Low Impact 3–5 years
Solid-State Battery Commercialisation
Toyota, Samsung SDI and QuantumScape targeting 2027–2028 commercial production. Uses lithium metal anode — potentially increases lithium intensity per kWh vs liquid electrolyte. Positive for lithium demand long term.
Affects: battery
High Impact Active
China Critical Mineral Export Controls
China has implemented export licensing for gallium, germanium, graphite and rare earth processing technology. Enforcement and scope subject to ongoing policy adjustment. Direct supply risk for Western manufacturers.
Affects: strategic, rare_earth, battery
Low Impact Ongoing
US IRA Critical Minerals Incentives
Inflation Reduction Act domestic content requirements for EV battery credits driving investment in non-Chinese supply chains. Benefits ASX and Canadian miners with US-market exposure.
Affects: battery, rare_earth
