USD Index climbed 0.76% to 100.85 overnight, driving broad price weakness across battery and base metals with lithium carbonate falling 1.33% to 167250 CNY/t, nickel dropping 1.41% to 17535 USD/t and copper sliding 1.65% to 6.3745 USD/lb. Spodumene SC6 eased 2.04% to 2443 USD/t while uranium edged 0.64% higher to 86.1 USD/lb. The stronger dollar compressed margins for non-USD producers without any offsetting demand data from China. No fresh mine disruptions, export bans or demand shocks emerged in the 21-22 June window, leaving the Freeport-McMoRan Grasberg force majeure in Indonesia as the dominant copper supply overhang with multi-hundred-thousand-tonne losses still projected into 2026 and the Talison Greenbushes lithium plant fire in Australia unchanged since mid-June. Markets therefore opened on technical selling rather than new physical tightness. ASX names most directly exposed include Albemarle and Tianqi Lithium via their Talison joint venture, Freeport-McMoRan’s Australian copper assets and Lynas Rare Earths through any correlated sentiment in magnet feedstocks, all facing margin pressure from the lithium and copper price declines recorded at the prior close.
